Jun 21, 2008 · The battery is known to be good. The issue seems to be that the alternator fails to charge it at low rpm. In choosing this type alternator you must consider, do you want to rev your motor slightly to get the alternator to turn on, if not the choose the CS series type alternator. Also when using the self-exciting alternator on tractors or other slow turning motors does the engine have enough RPM's to start the alternator charging.

Update: i moved my car into the garage and after i did that i checked the alternator voltage at the battery to see what it says and it said 13.3. i had my friend turn on the lights and it dipped to 13.1 then when he revved it the voltage went to 12.9. im not sure why the volts arent going up.

Oct 06, 2006 · It will also stay on and charge at idle once I do that. This is what they call a self excite alternator. The original alternator that it had when I bought the truck had a wire going to the voltage regulator that would turn the alternator on. The replacement alternator did not have this terminal and instead had a diode trio. That's because the battery was dead and all the electrical power was coming from the alternator with no battery to act as a load-balancer. Bear in mind here the distinction between a low charge, and a flat, dead battery. An alternator is an A/C generator. Cars used to have DC generators, since cars run off DC current. The reason manufacturers went to alternators is that they charge better at low RPM's. An alternator also runs less power through the brushes. A generator needs periodic brush replacement , because its DC output all goes through the brushes.

Although alternator manufacturers, rebuilders, and suppliers typically refer to the rated output in promotional materials, both the ISO and the SAE require a format of “IL / IRA VTV,” where IL is the low, or idle, amperage output, IR is the rated amperage output, and VT is the test voltage. wrx_02, your alternator should be charging the system at between 13.8 and 14.2 volts, or somewhere in that general area. If the output of the alternator is dropping to 11 volts at the output wire terminal on the alternator, it is not charging the system properly. The early GM 1-wire alternators (1972-1986) will need to have the RPM raised to 1000 – 1200 RPM initially to get the alternator charging and then it will continue to charge after that. The later style GM and all Ford and other style 1-wire alternators will excite immediately when the vehicle is started. Cleaned MAF, throttle body, coil pack connectors while it was opened up, charged the battery up to 12.9, started her up. Held 690-710 rpms for about 10 mins, with 13.7v charging. RPMs dropped down to 490-500 after 10-12 mins, showing 13.48v but holding. Going to let it idle a little longer and see if it drops down to the 400-450 it was doing ...

There should be around 14 Volts, right? At what RPMs? The voltage depends more on the batteries's State Of Charge (SOC) then the engine RPMs. I think they have brushes? Alternators can have brushes not regulators. If the alternator is defective get a remanufactured one. So I put it to charge at 2 AMP low and steady for about 24 hours >> now: 12 ...

I have a feeling you got an alternator with a bad regulator. IF the RPM's are within spec, you check voltage at the alternator and it's low, the regulator isn't good. Please keep in mind, low RPM's or a loose alt belt can cause this. Let me know,

In conclusion... This whole thing took about two full days time, about $100 in magnets and $30 in magnet wire. (The shaft and bearings I had on hand) Not a bad price for an effective low rpm alternator. It was also fun, and the information obtained is useful. A wide variety of low rpm generator alternator options are available to you, such as wind power generator, solar generator. Re: why is my 1-wire alternator setup not charging? If you pull the cable off the battery with the new alt, does it kill the engine? Edit sorry if I understand the way its hooked up it will kill the engine when you disconnect it because your breaking the connection to the engine. Nov 22, 2011 · When the top contact points are closed, maximum system voltage is applied to the alternator’s field (charging).
